Description
A vintage movie poster of ''Somebody Up There Likes Me'', a 1956 American drama film directed by Robert Wise. The film is based on the autobiography of the same name by former middleweight boxing champion Rocky Graziano. It tells the true story of Graziano's troubled youth, his transformation into a successful boxer, and his redemption.
Paul Newman stars as Rocky Graziano, delivering a powerful and memorable performance in one of his early leading roles. The film follows Rocky's journey from a troubled and delinquent youth in the slums of New York City to his eventual rise as a world champion boxer. Along the way, he faces numerous challenges, including run-ins with the law, time in juvenile detention, and a stint in the army. However, it's his talent and determination in the boxing ring that ultimately lead to his success and redemption.
"Somebody Up There Likes Me" explores themes of perseverance, second chances, and the power of self-belief. It also delves into the world of professional boxing, depicting the struggles and sacrifices that athletes in the sport often face.
The film is known for its compelling storytelling, well-drawn characters, and Paul Newman's charismatic and nuanced portrayal of Rocky Graziano. It captures the grittiness of urban life in the 1940s and 1950s and provides a glimpse into the world of boxing during that era.
"Somebody Up There Likes Me" received critical acclaim upon its release and earned several Academy Award nominations, including a Best Actor nomination for Paul Newman. The film's success helped solidify Newman's status as a Hollywood leading man, and it remains a classic in the genre of sports biopics.
The title of the film is taken from a line in Rocky Graziano's autobiography, reflecting his belief that despite his troubled past, he was fortunate to have found success and redemption in his life.
About the artist:
Hans Braun (1925—2011) was a German illustrator who painted art for film posters from the early 1940s to the early 1970s.
The sensuality of the human figures he portrayed is extremely physical. The charm of these movie stars passes through the artist’s talent, able to make their bodies defined and almost sculptural. The tones and colors are strong: intense reds, blacks, and purples. Even the rendering of faces and expressions makes them idealized but at the same time beauties in flesh and blood.
Braun delineates the figures with marked black outlines, embossing them on neutral and chromatic backgrounds as if they were sculptures. In this way, the protagonists stand out on the scene, impossible to look away from them.
