Description
Carl William Blegen (1887-1971) was an American archaeologist who worked on the site of Pylos in Greece, and Troy in modern-day Turkey. He directed the University of Cincinnati excavations of the mound of Hisarlik, the site of Troy, from 1932-1938. Bronze age Pylos was excavated by Carl Blegen between 1939 and 1952. it is located at modern Ano Englianos, Greece. Blegen called the remains of a large Mycenaean palace found there the 'Palace of Nestor', after the Homeric poems, and dated it to 1300 BC. Linear B tablets found by Blegen clearly demonstrate that the site itself was called Pylos by its Mycenaean inhabitants. The bronze bust in the photograph is displayed outside the Chora Archaeological Museum, Greece.
