Description
A vintage movie poster of ''The Life of Emile Zola'', a 1937 biographical drama film directed by William Dieterle and released by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film is based on the life of the renowned French writer Emile Zola and is known for its powerful storytelling and social commentary. Here's a brief description of the film:
Plot:
The film traces the life and career of Emile Zola, played by Paul Muni, a famous French writer and journalist known for his advocacy of social justice and his commitment to exposing social injustices. The story begins with Zola as a struggling writer in Paris, where he befriends the artist Paul Cézanne, played by Vladimir Sokoloff.
As Zola's career begins to take off, he becomes involved in the infamous Dreyfus Affair, a historical event that shook France in the late 19th century. Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French Army, is falsely accused of treason, and Zola takes up his cause. Zola writes an open letter titled "J'Accuse...!" in which he condemns the military and government for their anti-Semitic actions and the wrongful conviction of Dreyfus.
The film depicts Zola's courageous stand for truth and justice in the face of intense opposition, including threats to his own life. It follows the legal and political battles surrounding the Dreyfus Affair, which ultimately led to Dreyfus's exoneration and a reexamination of the French justice system.
Themes:
"The Life of Emile Zola" is a powerful exploration of themes such as courage, truth, justice, and the role of the press in exposing corruption. It portrays Zola as a hero who risks his reputation and safety to fight for what he believes is right.
Awards:
The film received critical acclaim and won three Academy Awards in 1938, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Joseph Schildkraut (who played Captain Dreyfus), and Best Writing (Screenplay).
"The Life of Emile Zola" is a compelling biographical drama that not only honors the life and legacy of Emile Zola but also sheds light on an important moment in French history and the fight against prejudice and injustice.
About the artist:
Eric Wilhelm Rohman (May 18, 1891, Nyköping, Sweden— Jan. 6, 1949, Stockholm) was a Swedish illustrator and advertising artist.
The crisp and essential style of Rohman is striking in his movie posters. His traits are well outlined and sharp and give life to the characters; he uses few colors and is never too loud, he has a great originality in managing the composition and the construction of space.
The Swedish artist creates movie posters that are caricatured and powerful in the representation, with high graphic settings. He depicts essential backgrounds of cities, apartment interiors, airplanes, bars, or simple backgrounds with geometric patterns. Rohman's posters attract the audience's attention creating curious scenes, geometric and coherent in the narrative but never static. That never gets boring.
He was raised in Helsingborg, where he discovered a passion for drawing and acting after his undergraduate education. To satisfy his newfound craving, he spent years studying under Swedish painter and illustrator Carl Wilhelmson at the Gothenburg Academy of the Arts. He took side work creating advertising illustrations for newspapers to pay his tuition. He also designed and drew several book covers and books.
Rohman had a brother who managed a large chain of theaters, which needed a constant supply of original art for film posters. Rohman then began working for his brother, which launched his career as a poster designer. In 1921 he was the only person in Sweden who worked full-time creating poster illustrations.
However, to fulfill the theater's demand, he had to work quickly. As a result, he designed four or five posters every week. But he was nonetheless generally still able to bring out the essential details of the film and its actors to express the essence of a film's theme.
